Ruins at Chan-chan

Twelve members of the La Libertad Club arrived at DFW airport in Dallas on October 15 at 10:47 a.m. After a fun week with us they continued by bus to Austin on October 22.

The exchange schedule is as follows:

 

Wednesday October 15

10:00 AM  Home Hosts and other members of club travel to DFW by auto to meet Delta Flight 1463 from Atlanta at 10:47 AM.  After greetings and welcome, home hosts take their guests to houses to rest.  (NOTE: the flight leaves Lima at 12:10 AM and they will have left Trujillo around 6 to 8 PM on the evening of Oct. 14, with plane changes in Lima and Atlanta, so they will need a rest and time for unpacking).  Please wear your FF badge and bring with you a sign with the name of your guest.  Check landing gate before going to DFW and we will meet at the baggage area.

 

Thursday, October 16

Daytime hours might include individual touring of parts of Dallas not on the scheduled tours.

5:00 PM: (In charge: James Bourn) Welcome party and reception at house of Jim Bourn.  This will be an outdoor casual party with pork barbecue and drinks furnished.  The entire club is invited.  Ambassadors attend free, Dallas Club members are asked to contribute $6.00 and bring a salad or vegetable dish.  To help with planning please make your reservation by Oct 14 if you plan to attend by calling Dale Yost or e-mailing the webmaster at txtravel@flash.net.  Those who can do so, please bring chairs.

 

Friday, October 17: Dallas Day

Walking trip of down town Dallas. (In charge: Ray Enstam)

10:00 AM: All ambassadors and their home hosts or day hosts, and all interested club members, meet at Union Station.  Paid parking is available nearby, but it is suggested that guests and hosts use free parking at the DART stations and buy a day pass on DART.  Cost of day pass is $2.50.  Cost of day pass for ambassadors is reimbursed by club.  The DART trip downtown is part of the tour and should be of interest to ambassadors. Ray Enstam will act as the tour guide of the walking tour and wait for all participants at the Union Station. 

 

We will take this route:

Walk up Young Street;

stop at the Pioneer Plaza sculptures to rest;

past city hall and library;

turn left on Harwood past Neiman Marcus and Thanksgiving Square and heart of city.

Stop at Ross, look from outside at Dallas Museum, Myerson Symphony Hall, Cathedral, Dallas Bar HQ at Belo Mansion, short visit to the sculptures at Trammel Crow building;

Take DART to West End (day pass covers this);

Lunch at West End: On The Border Tex-Mex, on Corbin Street, just off Market.  (Ambassadors meals paid by the club.)

Walking tour of West End and then past Kennedy Monument, School Book Depository, Dealey Plaza, Old Red Courthouse and back to Union Station.  Go up in the Hyatt Regency Tower for aerial view of the city and home by DART.

 

Saturday, October 18 and Sunday October 19

In house small group dinners at hour and date selected by the dinner host.  In charge: Mary Helen Lyons - MHLTX@mymailstation.com.  Days are free time for shopping, museums, etc or just getting to know the guests. 

 

Monday October 20, Dallas Arboretum

10:00 AM:  Visit to the Dallas Arboretum.  We get a group rate of $5 for a group of 20 or more (regular rate $7).  There is a picnic area with tables and also a snack-bar to purchase food.  Hosts are invited to bring picnic lunch so we can lunch together at tables with view of Lake, and you can buy drinks or any extras you may need.

 

Tuesday, October 21, Fort Worth Day (in charge: Ray Enstam)

10:00 AM.  Arrive by private auto at the Sid Richardson Western Art Museum at 309 Main Street (between 2nd and 3rd ).  Free entrance and also free parking nearby with stamped voucher from museum.  

Directions: LBJ to DFW Airport, take 121 South to Ft. Worth.  Stay on 121 (Becomes Belknap) past courthouse on left, turn left at Houston,  turn left on 3rd and Chisholm Trail. Parking lot is immediately on your right.  If lot is full proceed past Main to Commerce, left on Commerce and there is a garage on right side just past 2nd street.  Allow an hour (40 miles) from LBJ and Galleria area.

After this, to Stockyards to watch daily cattle drive at 11:30.  

Directions:  From museum go north on Commerce which merges into Main.  Stay on Main (also called Hwy 287) to E. Exchange Blvd. (just past 24th Street) and turn right. Go to end of street.  There is paid parking all along street, but the last lot on left is free, as is parking at end of street on top of hill near the Blue Armour Swift historical building.  You will be right across the street for Riscky Rita’s Tex-Mex (last restaurant on the right as you go along Exchange. About ten minute trip from museum.   Lunch at Riscky Rita’s Tex-Mex.  Ambassadors' lunches are paid by club.  To help reserve places at restaurant please give notice by Oct 14 if you plan to attend by calling Dale Yost, or contact Ray Enstam at enstam@sbcglobal.net.

 

After lunch each party on their own. 

Suggestions:

1. Tour of Stockyard area;

2. Return down Main Street to Sun Dance Plaza and center of Ft. Worth;

3. Go to museum area.  Return down Main Street, turn right on Northside Drive which becomes University, past Camp Bowie, and turn next right on Lancaster.  Kimbell Art Museum, Amon Carter Western Art Museum, Science Museum, Modern Art Museum.  

Easy way to Dallas from stockyards:

Go north on Main, turn right on 28th Street, north on 35W, east on 820, follow signs to 121 North.

 

Wednesday, October 22, Farewell Party.

5:00 PM.  Farewell party at Darwin and Myra Smith’s house.  This will be a catered barbecue, for which the caterer will set up a serving line in the back yard.  Ambassadors attend free and members of FF Dallas will pay a fee of $15.00 based on our actual costs. To help with planning please send payment by Oct 17 to Dale Yost, or contact the webmaster for information: txtravel@flash.net. Price includes music, entertainment, drinks and partying!  Party will be a Halloween theme, and costumes are appropriate!

 

Thursday, October 23 Departure for Austin.

Bus departure from 7:30 AM at Greyhound Station, 205 S. Lamar.  Home hosts will arrange transportation for guests.

State Fair of Texas.  This is only open until Sunday, Oct. 19, so go early in the exchange.  Thursday is Seniors Day. (You can also visit these museums after the fair is over.) Fairgrounds:

-    Kennedy Museum – inside tour.  We will pass by the outside on Dallas Day but will not go in.  It costs around $10 and takes around two hours.  They have Spanish (and English) audio phones.

Sunday night with Paula: Paula Rose will host Sunday night of Salsa music and dancing at Monica Aca y Alla.  Starts around 9:30 PM.  Call her to get details, arrange meeting and reserving table.  Our guests all say they like to dance.

Winery: Delaney Vineyards, 2000 Champagne Blvd.  817-481-5668.  Get on 121 South from DFW heading toward Ft. Worth and get off at Glade Road and turn left under the highway.  Tours are Mon-Sat., 12-4 on the hour and last 20 minutes.  Tour is free and  there is an optional wine tasting afterwards for $7.
