"Open Doors" Comes to Fort Worth

The "Open Doors Southwest" experiment is underway. Each club in the Friendship Force Southwest Conference has agreed to home host members of other SW Conference clubs for a 3-day weekend. The weekend may be chosen to coincide with a special event in the host club's city.

San Antonio is the first club to host an event on the weekend of their Folklife Festival, June 11-13.

The Fort Worth club plans to host the first Fort Worth event on September 17-19. This is the weekend of Jazz on the Boulevard and the Latin Arts festival. Jazz on the
Boulevard is a free event on the lawn north of the Will Rogers Complex and includes free concerts. Last year was the first year and included many excellent jazz musicians. These events will add options for the weekend visitors.

Be sure and mark this weekend on your calendars. It will be fun and we will need lots of participation to ensure success. More details on reservations later.

From FFI

New FFI President

At the regular meeting of the FFI Board of Trustees on March 19, 2004, George Brown was elected the next President of Friendship Force International. Many of you know George well, as he served in various capacities at the FFI office in the past. For those of you who do not know George, he brings a wide range of international experience to the position. He knows FFI well, but having worked for other international exchange organizations, he has a diverse background to draw upon as he takes over as FFI's next president.

George will begin serving as President of FFI on April 1, 2004, but for the first two months he will be in transition from his current job as Executive Director of the Georgia Council for International Visitors, whose offices, conveniently, are located in the same building as those of FFI. Even during the transition phase, however, he will be participating fully in the life of FFI by attending the European and Japanese leadership meetings in May.

If you wish to welcome George Brown as our new president, he can be reached via e-mail at gbrown@friendshipforce.org. However, please keep in mind that George will be in transition during the next month.

World Affairs Council of Greater Dallas
will host a delegation of
10 Law and Justice Professionals from
Oryol, Russia

****************************************

We are trying to find host families for only one or two weeks for 5 of our participants. They’re all married, 3 non-smokers, aged between 32-43 years old. Our guests will arrive in Dallas on June 2 and will stay with us till June 24. They are university professors, judges, attorneys and NGO directors. We are sure you would enjoy meeting our visitors and sharing our Texas heritage and hospitality with them!

LEARN ABOUT RUSSIA BY VOLUNTEERING AS A PROFESSIONAL HOST,
HOME HOST, DRIVER, OR MENTOR!

We have lots of things planned for this new group… the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a trip to Ft. Worth, and a Russian Independence Day celebration! Please help out this group by volunteering as a mentor! If you are interested in mentoring, or would like more information, please contact Trisha Raines immediately at traines@dallasworld.org or call 214-965-8407.

Program Dates:
JUNE 2 - JUNE 24, 2004

Home Hosts: Host a Russian professional in your home during their professional and cultural program in Dallas. Home hosting can last anywhere from one to three weeks and the experience is priceless! Your guest will work the entire week, and will enjoy planned Saturday activities. Simply provide an extra room and an occasional meal to your guest. It is a unique way to experience a new culture and make a life long friend!

Professional Hosts: As a professional host, provide a group training session, seminar, or meeting for the participants. The focus of the program is to provide an overview of the American legislative system. Topics may include, but are not limited to, law enforcement, courts, policy-making, NGO’s, or local government. If you are involved with an organization related to legislation and law, please help us by giving the participants invaluable insight into various aspects of American government.

Home Hosts: Learn more about Russian culture and law by volunteering as a home host!

1. When does the group arrive?
The group will arrive in Dallas on Wednesday, June 2 and stay here till Thursday, June 24. They will spend first three days at Radisson Hotel in Richardson for the program’s orientation. We will also host a welcome reception for our guests on Thursday, June 3, at 7 pm at the hotel.

2. When do you need home hosts?
You can host for only one or two weeks of our participants’ stay in Dallas: prior to their overnight trip to Austin or after their return.

First Week: Saturday (June 5) – Sunday (June 13)
Second Week: Wed evening (June 16) – Thursday morning (June 24)

3. What are my duties as a home host?
As a host, we ask that you provide a private bedroom to the participant and occasional meals. You do not have to serve the participants – they can help themselves or participate in your family meals. We also provide entertainment activities and transportation for our guests.

4. What is the participant’s schedule?
During the week, the participants will attend training sessions. They will usually leave around 8:30am and return home after 6:00pm. Our program mentors will alleviate home hosts in the evenings by providing cultural outings for the participants, e.g. going to the movies, dinner, or shopping. In addition, we will have several group activities arranged on weekends, such as visits to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Museum of Art and a trip to Ft. Worth. Home hosts are welcome to join us in these activities or you may arrange additional outings.

5. How is transportation provided?
We will have a van to take the participants from a central meeting place to their training sessions each day.

Home hosting is a unique way to experience a new culture and make a new friend. I

Mentors: As a mentor, you serve as a friend and contact for one of the participants. Just meet with the participant at least once a week during the program to show them Dallas and make them feel at home. Anything from picnics to shopping to the opera – show them how we have fun in Dallas! You can also join in group cultural and social activities arranged by the program.

Drivers: Help drive a participant to or from their professional appointment. It is a unique way to lighten up the daily commute! We select participants close to your home or work, and always work around your schedule.
