Jim's
Jewels
By
the time you receive this newsletter, I will be in Europe for our
exchange with Kiel and South Flanders. It promises to be a great exchange and a chance to meet many new
friends.
The exchanges for 2005 have been approved and work has started for the outbound to Trujillo,
Peru and an inbound from Tottori, Japan. Speaking of Exchanges, a big "atta-girl"
and thanks to Chris Michalek as ED and Paula Harkey and Nancy Hicks for a great
Asheville Inter-Club exchange. Much was learned -
mainly don't walk so far, and I will take responsibility for that error. Cleveland County, UK is coming
in the fall. Ray Enstam is heading that exchange. Let's all get behind him in our usual gracious Texas
style.
Brud
Kisner is heading up the Nominations Committee for Board officers for
next year. Now is the time to let your ideas and wishes be known. We now have a newsletter editor - Edward
Perez. Thanks a million, as I type like the frog getting out of the famous well. (Type three
letters, backspace one, etc. to correct errors.)
The mini-exchanges in the region have also started. Let me know
if any of you go on one and how you liked it. These are small exchanges where one city offers so
many homes for a weekend and then it's "first come, first served" for any member in the
region. Our turn will come; those that offer homes will have a priority on future exchanges.
We have had several visitors
who have expressed interest in joining. Just talk it up everywhere you go and it will amaze you how
much interest the club generates. You even meet new friends.
Again,
I want to thank the officers and committees who have helped so much this
year. We will try several new ideas in our fall program. Look for the flyers on events in the fall as
we try to maximize the fun and minimize the cost.
Remember the International
Conference is in Los
Angeles in early November. Our new President or a club representative will attend. Let me know if you are planning to attend.
Our
club has a
" can do"
reputation. Have a great summer!
In
Friendship,
Jim

2004
Exchanges
Outbound:
Kiel, Germany and South Flanders, Belgium June 1-15, 2004
By
the time you're reading this, Jim Bourn will be leading FFD'ers on a
two-week trip to Kiel, Germany [in northern Germany; FFers from there were our first inbound exchange in
1995] and then on to Oudenaarde in the Flanders region of Belgium. Maybe they'll bring some of those
famous Belgian chocolates to share!
Inbound:
Cleveland County, England October 9-16, 2004
In
October, we will host FF friends from Cleveland County, England. Ray
Enstam has been appointed Exchange Director. If you are interested in being on the planning
committee, hosting, day hosting or helping in any way, contact Ray at enstam@sbcglobal.net.
Twelve ambassadors have signed up to come so far. They will travel to Tuxla, Mexico after visiting us.
Formerly known as Teesside, this county of northeast England is industrially oriented around the Lower Tees Valley
and estuary. It is bounded by Durham to the northwest, North Yorkshire to the south, and the North Sea
to the northeast. Winters are long and hard, spring late and short, and summer temperatures generally
cool. The annual rainfall (about 25 inches) is among the lowest in the country, thanks largely to the
county being located in the lee rain shadow of the Pennine uplands.

Friendship Force Mourns Death of Wayne Smith
Dear friends,
It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of the death of our founder and longtime leader, Wayne Smith, Wednesday night (June 16) at his home in Big Canoe, Georgia. He was 69 years old. I know each member of the global Friendship Force family joins me in expressing our deepest sympathy to Wayne's wife, Carolyn, his daughter and our former President, Susie Smith, and all the members of their family.
I spoke with Wayne several weeks ago. As always, he was energetically pursuing new ways to fulfill his lifelong passion for bringing people together in friendship. As many of you know, Wayne's most recent activity with the Friendship Force was last December when he led a delegation to Jordan, with home stays he arranged with Iraqi families in Jordan. Wayne created the Friendship Force and led it for its first 24 years, leaving us a wonderful legacy.
Our greatest tribute to this giant of a man will be to rededicate ourselves to the task he began. Let us make his dream our dream, knowing that he never tired of telling us, "a world of friends is a world of peace."
A memorial service will be held for Wayne at the Big Canoe Chapel on Monday, June 21 at 2:00 p.m. If you would like to send any messages to the family, you may send them to Carolyn Smith at: 9003 Trotter's Lane, 10173 Big Canoe, Big Canoe, Georgia 30143.
Next week we will put an appropriate tribute to Wayne on the FFI website.
In friendship,
George Brown
President
NOTE:
See more on Wayne Smith on the FFI page.
New
FFI President
At
the March 19, 2004 meeting of the FFI Board of Trustees, George Brown
was elected the next President of Friendship Force International. Many of you know George
well, as he served in various capacities at the FFI office in the past.
For those of you who do not
know George, he brings a wide range of international experience to the position. He knows FFI well, but
having worked for other international exchange organizations, he has a diverse background to draw upon as he
takes over as FFI's next
president. George began serving as President of FFI on April 1, 2004,
but for the first two months he will be in transition from his current job as Executive Director of the
Georgia Council for International Visitors
(whose
offices, conveniently, are located in the same building as FFI's). Even
during the transition phase, however, he will be participating fully in the life of FFI by attending
the European and Japanese
leadership meetings in May.
If you wish to welcome George Brown as our
new president, you can send him an e-mail at gbrown@friendshipforce.org.
However, please keep in mind that George will be in transition during the next month.
Highlights at FFI
See each
monthly issue of the Leadership Forum for the
whole text. Here are some highlights from George Brown's May Leadership
Forum:
The
first month on the job as President of FFI has been hectic, but very
rewarding. It has been my privilege to participate in regional meetings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin;
Missoula, Montana; Hamburg, Germany; and tomorrow I will travel to Tokyo, Japan for the all-Japan
annual meeting. Congratulations to the host clubs for all these conferences. I've been very impressed and
gratified by the excellent programs and the enthusiastic participation by our leaders. I've shared my ideas
for the future, and I've also been listening to our leaders - hearing their hopes for the Friendship Force,
as well as the challenges that they face. Through all the meetings, receptions, meals, and parties, my faith
in our organization and the dedication of our leaders has been strongly reinforced. In the months
ahead I'll be spending most of my time at the office in Atlanta, working with the staff as we complete
this year's exchanges and plan for next year. I'll also be looking for new opportunities for Friendship Force
International as together we seek to fulfill our vision that a world of friends is a world of peace.
