Exploring
Portugal with the Smiths

Last
November, Mick and I did a bit of "free-style" traveling in
Portugal. Our first week was spent on the southern coast, the Algarve, 150 km [90
miles] of beaches warmed by the
winds from North Africa! Lovely to think of now on these cold winter days! We explored the old town in
Albuferia and the morning market in Silves (where Mick made a great deal on some pants!). We moved north
to Lisbon the second week and found our home in a small "hotelapartment" in the suburb
town of Monte Estoril, conveniently located near the neighborhood grocery and on the train line - our source of
transportation! We were given a crash course in the use of the auto ticket machine by a
sweet young lady who saw us struggling one morning.
In
Lisbon, we walked the back streets of the old town, Alfama, and saw
laundry strung from window to window, much as it has been for years. Lisbon is full of green parks,
jardims, free for all to stroll and enjoy.
While
bike riding along the coast in Cascais, we met a young man who kindly
suggested we try the local cuisine, fish stew, at his favorite restaurant - interesting!!! A day
trip to Sintra, just northwest of Lisbon, was a particular favorite for both of us. There were so many wonderful
things to see here - a day was not enough. If given the chance, take the opportunity to visit this
beautiful country and experience the kindness of its people.
