Jim's
Gems
From Jim Bourn
As we reach the end of the year, we all need to give thanks to God for all
the blessings we have as a nation, state, city, and club. A rousing cheer of
thanks go to edward perez, his officers and all who helped him in his
successful leadership of the club and an example of cooperation to achieve the end product
for all members.
I hope to also be successful with the help of my staff, officers and all
those who step forward to fill the many jobs to make a successful program for our
members and guests. Thanks everyone for their support as we continue to
have a club that is known for a can-do spirit.
I believe that as a whole, if we have a successful program, don't try to fix
it. At the same time, many who went on the exchange to San Francisco returned
with praise for the many activities that were different from the usual visit. With
this in mind, I would like to urge each inbound exchange, add SOMETHING
DIFFERENT AND KEEP IT FUN. Our first exchange, with Sacramento, has
several new ideas that all of us will enjoy. Some of these new activities will
be discussed at the monthly business meetings and the meetings that each
exchange will hold. An example of this is possibly to hold several dinners for 16
persons at various small restaurants and thus more can attend and everyone will
feel welcome yet not overload one person in home preparation and meal preparation. At the same time people can experience great meals at places
too small to be used for a complete club meeting. In the summer, meals could be box
lunches or picnics to allow a larger selection of visits. If anyone has similar
new ideas, please let me know at business meetings of the club or smaller
meetings of individual exchanges.
Several of our members are planning to go to
the Regional [Southwest Regional Conference] in Wichita, Kansas at the end of March. Some of us are driving to save
the cost of flight expense. Conference is March 23, 24, 25 and homestay March
25, 26, 27, if desired. I am looking forward to working and traveling with everyone.
In friendship,
Jim Bourn

Exchanges
International Exchanges for 2012
From May 12 to 19 of 2012
we will jointly host an inbound exchange from Bogotá, Colombia with the Fort Worth club. Many of you will recall that our club went
to Bogotá in 2007 as a joint exchange with Houston. It was a marvelous
experience and they were great hosts. They also hosted our Spanish Language exchange in
2009. So to many of us they are old friends. Since they normally travel with 40
persons, which is beyond our capacity to host, we were assigned this as an
exchange with Fort Worth. This is a new concept for hosting and we will
be coordinating joint events and hosting with Fort Worth, acting together as
one exchange. This will be a great chance to brush up on your Spanish! For more
information, or to work on the committee, please contact Exchange Director
Raymond Enstam at enstam@sbcglobal.net.
From
Sept 25 to Oct 2, 2012 we will have an outbound exchange to Haliburton Highlands,
Ontario, Canada. This is the same club that we hosted in 2010. This should be a
popular destination because we have friends there, and travel costs and time will
be less than many more distant places. And Canada is a great place to visit!
They will be able to host 20 people, and we will begin to publicize the
exchange after the first of the year and have applications at that time. Paula Rose is
the Dallas Exchange Director (she was also the Exchange Director when we hosted
that club in Dallas). For more information please contact Paula at paularose2000@hotmail.com.
A visit to Cincinnati for a domestic exchange has been planned for the week prior
to Haliburton Highlands for those who would like a combined two weeks of
exchanges; see next section. Applications for both outbound
exchanges will be available after January 8.

Domestic Exchanges
From Dale Klosterman
We have two domestic exchanges in 2012:
Inbound exchange from Sacramento - April 7-14
(we visited them in 2009).
Wendy Whaley will be Exchange Director. Contact: whwhaley@yahoo.com.
Outbound Exchange to Cincinnati, Ohio, September 18 - 24,
immediately prior to exchange to Halliburton Highlands. Mary Williams is the
Exchange Director. Dale says: “September is a good time to see the changes in
colors in Cincinnati and the city has a lot to offer. The FFI web site has a
description of what is available in the Greater Cincinnati area and what the club
usually offers to people when they have an exchange. Covington, Kentucky
is a Cincinnati suburb – right across the river – and homes on the Kentucky
side are famous as the last stop on the “underground railway”. If you would like
to collect fossils, Cincinnati is world famous for its invertebrate fossils that date from
the Ordovician Period (450,000,000 years ago). You can buy your own collection
of fossils from the Natural History Museum. It also has a world-class symphony
orchestra, arts district, and zoo. And so much more. “
Contact: mwilliamstxtravel@yahoo.com
It is always exciting to begin planning a new exchange, and Cincinnati
sounds like a very exciting addition to our outbound schedule. This would make a great
driving trip for those who would like to experience two homestays. Many
people who hosted Ottawans may want to also go to Ottawa after the visit to Haliburton,
as it is not far from Haliburton. And looking ahead - Cincinnati is interesting in
coming here in 2013.
UPDATE: Dale has scheduled
another domestic outbound exchange with Morganton, NC -
the last two week in July. Escape Texas to cool off in the North
Carolina mountains! Sandy Kaiser has agreed to be Exchange Director. See
the Exchanges page for more details.
