Exchanges
for 2009
The Dallas club participated in these 2009 international exchanges and
domestic exchanges:
 | Inbound exchange from San Francisco
club -
April 25 - 30, 2009. Dale Klosterman,
Exchange Director and Hilda Klosterman Assistant ED (The SF club visited San
Antonio 4/19-24 before coming to Dallas.) Our exchange concluded with a good time
had by all.. See schedule for the week. See Photos.
|
We received this letter from Gail Boyd,
ED, on September 2, 2009:
April 19-30, 2009
The exchange directors, Mary Jordan (San Antonio) and Dale Klosterman (Dallas) had planned our visit with a “Get ’em up and ride ’em out” schedule every day—little time to set your “boots” out on the porch!
We begin this travelogue by thanking the San Antonio and Dallas clubs for their gracious hospitality, both in their homes and on the days of adventure and discovery around their beautiful cities. The welcome and farewell parties gave us a very traditional feeling of the Friendship Force, bringing strangers together who have the common goal of making friends, and made us want to stay just a little bit longer.
In San Antonio, Fiesta Week activities included parades, parties, mariachi music, and traditional Mexican and
Tex/Mex food. The lineup for evening festivities included: The Texas Cavaliers River Parade, Mexican Market Square and Mariachi River Parade, NIOSA (Night In Old San Antonio) and Friendship Force potluck dinners.
The Battle of the Flowers Band Festival was held in the Alamo Stadium where 3,000 youths performed and competed for ribbons. As Luree Miller wrote on this, her first exchange, “Hats Off to Texas” about the local high school marching bands competing for top honors. All of us had that heart-warming feeling, seeing the support of family and friends for these young musicians, both on the field and in the stands.
On our last day, we attended the Battle of the Flowers Parade, which stretched across downtown San Antonio for miles. One of the traditions was to yell out to the Queens in the beautiful gowns on the passing floats, “Show Your Shoes, Show Your Shoes!” To our surprise, they ranged from boots to sleepers.
Before we arrived in Dallas, Luree Miller and Katherine Kleinke returned home. Lorne and Angela Hill, of the Burlington/ Hamilton Friendship Force Club, joined us in Dallas for the remainder of the exchange. Once we all met our hosts and had barely unpacked, it was off to the Mesquite Rodeo, a “Real Texas Festival.” For many of us it was our first “live” rodeo. It will never be the same again to just watch it on TV. Lots of boot stomping and yip, yips from both the spectators and the cowboys in the ring!
Our next day out on the Texas plains was to horse country in Aubrey, Texas, to tour the Mandolyn Hill Ranch, an Arabian horse farm. Many of their horses are trained to become racing horses, which have won trophies here in California and in other states. (No betting tips given!) Day three, a day of showers, did not keep us from the Dallas Arboretum. Mary Alice van
Doorn, an experienced Ambassador and FFSFBA member, wrote, “The Dallas Arboretum is an absolute treasure trove! …many wonderful displays of flora and fauna.”
The week went fast. Dallas Day was spent at the Book Depository’s 6th floor and President John F. Kennedy Memorial Museum, which documents the day President Kennedy was assassinated. Then the DART bus tour of downtown stopped at an amazing bronze sculpture of a lifelike cattle drive, sculpted by Texan Robert Summers, which graces a 4.2-acre plaza in front of the City Hall and the Convention Center. (There are three riders, a Gringo, a Mexican, and an Indian.) Then off to the Cadillac Bar for more great
Tex/Mex delicacies.
Somehow we managed to have a free day with our hosts before the drive to Fairview, Texas, for the Farewell party where we had some Southern cuisine and a teardrop or two.
Lori and I would like to take the opportunity to thank our exchange team: Mary and Donald Pelland, Booklet and Exchange Banker; and Bruce Wilner, Texas Cultural Historian.
—Gail Boyd and Lori English
Texas Exchange Directors
 | Outbound Exchange to Sibiu, Romania -
May 13 - 26, 2009. Ed Edgren, Exchange Director and Teresa
Wilkin, Assistant ED. (Ed did not go on the exchange.) UPDATE 6/11/09:
This exchange has concluded with a Dallas contingent of nine ambassadors and four
members from other clubs joining us.
|
This
exchange was a great opportunity to visit Friendship Force friends in Sibiu and Brasov
and to tour within Romania, as
interest in travel to this region is continually growing. Since the two Romanian
clubs have hosted Americans and now wish to host people from other countries, this may be the last American exchange for awhile!
We visited the historic area of Transylvania and walked through picturesque castles, medieval churches and citadels. Included was a two night
stay in Bucharest with
a city tour there; a drive to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle; a stay in a ski resort area near
Brasov (Brasov and the Black Church pictured here) for a two night stay; visits with our Brasov friends; then on to
the Sibiu Friendship Force Club for a seven-day homestay; day excursions from Sibiu were
planned by our hosts. The group returned to Bucharest on 5/25 for flights home on 5/26.
Cost was approximately $1700 - without airfare or meals on the tour portion.
There was considerable walking, much of it up many steps. Exchange participants should
be aware that exchanges in other countries often include more strenuous exercise than
they may be accustomed to at home, and come prepared to walk and to be flexible. See the
itinerary and more information: Sibiu
Romania.
See photos in the July
2009 Newsletter and the Sibiu Photos page.
 | Outbound Domestic Exchange to
Sacramento - August 3 - 8, 2009. Mary Williams, Exchange Director. The group of 12 visited Lake Tahoe, Murphy - a
small gold mining town in the foothills, a trip to the big trees in Calavaras, a winery tour, a tour of the Capital in downtown Sacramento, and a visit to the railroad
museum, "the railroad was and is a big deal here" plus a "free
day." And of course parties! Those participating arranged their own travel to Sacramento
individually, arriving on August 3rd and departing on August 8th. A good time was
had!

UPDATE from Ray - 8/22/08:
To all Costa
Rica participants
I just got my copy of the second quarter Friendship
Magazine and on page 8 there is a story entitled "Learning the Tico Way"
regarding the education exchange to Costa Rica that John Whaley told us about at the
monthly meeting several months ago. John's picture is on the upper right of
the page. "Tico" is a word that the Costa Ricans use to refer to
themselves. Turrialba is in the central plateau so hopefully we won't have the
temperatures the article refers to!

Costa Rica Humanitarian Trip
Club member John Whaley joined a Friendship Force International exchange
to Costa Rica in March, 2008. The group traveled to tiny Brasilito on the Pacific coast where
they brought school supplies and taught English for the town's school of 150 kids. The
school has very few resources and needs a computer and photocopier. The group hopes to
raise funds to provide these as well. Our club has donated $250 to purchase equipment.
If you would like also to donate to the equipment fund, you can send a tax
deductible check made payable to Friendship Force International, 233 Peachtree St., Suite
2250, Atlanta, GA 30303 attn: Ana Smulski. John will tell of his adventures at the June
club meeting. Three photos from the school are shown here.
UPDATE: This letter was received June 14, 2008 -
Dear Wendy:
Thank you and the Friendship Force of Dallas for your contribution of $250 to the Costa
Rica Humanitarian School Fund through Friendship Force Internaponal.
Your commitment to assist the local school in the village of Brasilito with needed
teaching aids, books, student supplies, clothing, computers and equipment is sincerely
appreciated. We're excited about the vast array of new opportunities our members have
for changing the way they see the world through the perspective of understanding and
respect between people as a result of personal connection through the "force of
friendship."
Again, thank you for endorsing this grand vision, and then working with us to make it a
reality.
In friendship,
George T. Brown, Jr.
President

Mission
Trip to Romania
This
trip took place Sept 6th
- 20th, 2005.
The group of 20 people toured Romania for 12 nights in a dedicated minibus,
with Dallas as departure city.
Ed described the mission this
way:
Members of the Dallas club need several pioneers willing to explore the new Eastern frontier (Romania) to initiate contacts for potential new clubs in Bucharest and either Brasov or
Buzau, Romania. We will travel throughout the country by bus with driver and English speaking guide to
Sibiu, Cluj, Bistria, Suceava, Sighisoara, Brasov, Dracula's Castle (just to say you've been there) and Bucharest.
Your Mission, should you accept it (TV program in the 60's?), is to treat two or three Romanian citizens to a group dinner and viewing of our new Friendship Force video. That will be about $8 if you buy the wine too! We will visit one or two Schools for the Visually Deficient as
the Dallas club has sent 12 computers for the blind to these schools. You will also be asked to select an e-mail pal once we have visited the cities to begin a support
netw ork effort to start up their clubs.
Brasov
Trip includes daily walking;
there are no accommodations for handicapped individuals as Romania was a communist dictatorship until 1989 and the infrastructure is in need of upgrading.
You will come away with a tremendous satisfaction in befriending a poor country. The younger people speak English, businesses are computer literate and Americans are thought of very positively.
(See Ed's e-mails from
Romania on our Articles page.)
UPDATE: As of February, 2006
there are three new clubs forming in Romania, and one of them may be
visiting the Dallas club in 2007. There are more mission
trips going to Romania. See Other Clubs.

Inbound:
Cleveland
County, England - October 9-16, 2004 We completed an
incoming exchange in October, 2004 with FF friends from Cleveland County,
England. Ray
Enstam was Exchange Director for this exchange. Twelve ambassadors came
to Dallas and continued to
Tuxla, Mexico after visiting us.
Formerly
known as Teesside, this county of northeast England is industrially
oriented around the Lower Tees Valley and estuary. It is bounded by
Durham to the northwest, North Yorkshire to the south, and the North
Sea to the northeast. Winters are long and hard, spring late and short,
and summer temperatures generally cool. The annual rainfall (about 635
mm) is among the lowest in the country, thanks largely to the county
being located in the lee ("rain shadow") of the Pennine
uplands.

29th International Conference!
November 3-6, 2005
São Paulo
,
Brazil

|
The Friendship Force of São Paulo welcomes you to experience the lure
of Brazil! Come discover a country with thousands of different landscapes,
a huge blend of colors, wonderful sounds and smells, but above all
the people. If Rio has gained fame for its striking postcard
harbor, São Paulo's attraction lies in its people and its vibrant cultures. A
more cosmopolitan city than its counterpart, São Paulo possesses significant ethnic communities making it the perfect
place to host Friendship Force's 29th International Conference.
Brazil's most modern city has much to offer in terms of
outstanding cuisines, fine museums, coastlines graced with many
lovely beaches, entertainment and an exciting nightlife. Post-conference
home hosting is available for 4 nights by the clubs in the São Paulo area. Following the conference or after the home hosting
there will be optional tours to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
